It’s cold and wintery outside…let’s go to Puerto Rico to walk in the rain forest and swim amongst the mangroves! Join local author Cynthia Kreilick on Sunday, January 22 at 11 a.m. as she reads from “Wake Up Little Island/¡Despiértate, Isla Pequeña!
And no reading is complete without an activity: we’ll be making Taino bookmarks after the reading, a craft inspired by the Taino Indians of the Caribbean who invented words we use such as, “canoe,” “hammock,” and “barbecue.” They also created symbols, often carved in rock, that today are celebrated and shared in cultural traditions around the world. We'll decipher some of the symbols for “life force,” “inward journey,” “fertility,” and “creation” and put them on bookmarks to take home.
This story time will be presented in English and Spanish. Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. For ages 5 - 8.
